Services
Mud Logging Services The primary function of this service is to detect
and position with respect to depth all Hydrocarbon
accumulations while drilling a well. This is accomplished
by continuous monitoring and analysis of hydrocarbons
in the drilling fluid. A Total Gas Detector (an
instrument that measures the Total Hydrocarbon
content) is used along with or in combination with
a High Speed Chromatograph (an instrument that
identifies and provides relative concentrations
of each hydrocarbon component) (c1- c8 plus co2
and nitrogen)). The data obtained from these instruments
allows for rapid formation evaluation of all prospective
zones with respect to Hydrocarbon accumulations.
The detailed data is then submitted on a computer
generated comprehensive Hydrocarbon log along with
a complete interpretive well review done by a senior
Continental representative.
APPLICATIONS OF LIMITED AND COMPLETE LOGGING
SERVICES
Some of the applications of these services would
be to determine Gas / Oil / Water contact zones
on vertical and horizontal wells. Can be used on
Exploration / Wildcat wells where no offset data
is available. These services can be used for rapid
formation evaluation when time is crucial for making
logging or casing decisions. These services are
readily used for meeting Government Board safety
requirements when drilling in highly sensitive
areas. Extremely beneficial when drilling in Over-Pressured
Fault Zones (Foothills Wells) and in areas with
High Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) zones where Safety
is of the utmost importance. These services would
also be beneficial in helping a wellsite geologist
keep up with sample processing on high speed wells.

APPLICATIONS FOR TOTAL GAS DETECTION SERVICE
This service is typically provided for special
projects (down-spacing wells, coal-bed methane
projects) or wells as a cost saving alternative
to having a wellsite geologist on site when no
sample descriptions are required. The client will
still receive hydrocarbon data and samples can
still be processed and collected by the analyst
for client review at a later date and for Government
board requirements. This service would be beneficial
for clients that have wells in areas with good
offset data and good well control.
COMPUTER GENERATED HYDROCARBON WELL
LOG
Results of the total gas data, chromatographic
analysis and the sample examination are presented
on our computer generated comprehensive hydrocarbon
well log. This log is plotted on a 1:240 API wireline
equivalent scale to promote rapid correlation
between the hydrocarbon well log and the wireline
logs.
Distinctive features include:
* Total Gas, Chromatography and Oil Indicator
curves.
* Penetration Rate Curve (which can be plotted
on a linear or semi-logarithmic scale).
* Engineering and Drilling Fluid parameters.
* Lithology in per cent as well as the Interpretive
Lithology.
* Porosity and Visual Show indicators.
* Total Show Evaluator (provides swift location
and indicates the quality of the most significant
shows based on the analyst's evaluation of the
hydrocarbon data).
INTERPRETIVE SERVICE
In addition to the hydrocarbon log, an in-depth
analysis is provided of all instrument charts
derived from the hydrocarbon detection equipment.
This analysis will be performed by supervisory
personnel, normally in consultation with the unit
manager, at selected intervals and at the conclusion
of the well. These intervals are usually intermediate
log and casing runs or zones of particular geological
interest. Detailed annotations arising from this
analysis are carefully plotted on a print of the
log and, together with the actual instrument chart
data, comprise the basis for an in-depth conference
with the well operator. This conference will result
in the fullest understanding and utilization of
the hydrocarbon logging data as it applies to
the well evaluation program. This interpretive
service is provided at no additional cost.
CHROMATOGRAPHIC RATIO PLOT
As a supplement to the hydrocarbon well log Continental
Laboratories utilizes a chromatographic ratio
plot to help determine the character of the reservoir
fluids. A plot of the wetness, balance and character
ratios reveals trends, which allow the type of
reservoir fluids to be recognized. Significant
shifts in these trends can help locate contact
points between different reservoir fluids. Contact
points between gas, oil, solvent and water have
been located through the use of these ratio plots.

papers.
HYDROCARBON DATA IN LAS FORMAT
The Canadian Well Logging Society has developed
the Log ASCII Standard (LAS) in order to standardize
the organization of digital log curve information
for floppy disks. Information from Continental
Laboratories Hydrocarbon Well Log can be digitized
in the LAS format and stored on a floppy disk.
This allows digitized data from the hydrocarbon
log to be merged with other digitized log data.
The Alberta Energy Utility Board intends to require
the submission of log digits. The current procedure
of submitting paper logs is to continue but plans
are to slowly phase this out and replace it with
a digital database.
D. GAS DETECTION RENTAL SERVICE
For nearly Fifty years Continental Laboratories
Ltd. has been providing a complete line of rental
portable Hydrocarbon Detector's (Gas Detectors)
to the wellsite geologist(s) in the Oil and Gas
industry. The line of portable detectors includes
the MP2300
, the MP2500
remote Single
filament and the new MP2500
remote Dual
Filament. All portable gas detectors
provided by Continental Labs Ltd. are CSA
approved to meet all safety standards
and are calibrated for linear response with known
concentrations of gases to ensure accurate and
reliable hydrocarbon data.
MUD DUCK RENTAL SERVICE H2S
Management System
The Mud Duck is the only instrument providing continuous,
in the drilling fluid, measurement of total soluble
sulfides, pH and H2S hazard potential. "At
the source" measurement of these three parameters
provides both an early warning system for the
onset of H2S and means for managing sulfides in
solution. This instrument is often combined as
a supplementary addition to our limited &
complete logging service as a safety measure when
drilling a sour gas well.
HYDROCARBON WELL LOG LIBRARY
Over the years, Continental Laboratories has
accumulated over 3000 hydrocarbon well
logs in our library. The library contains well logs
throughout the Western Canadian Sedimentary
Basin, Eastern Canada(onshore/offshore)
, the Northwest Territories, the arctic, and the United States. A list
of logs from specific locations/areas can be obtained by contacting
Continental Laboratories Ltd. Please check the log library link for available wells and locations. Copies of logs can be provided for a cost to your invoice
.
